The Devil’s Kitchen is a Democracy School initiative. Actors (m/f/x) interested in being considered for a part in this production are kindly asked to forward their CV, together with a motivation letter (see footer for details).
Selection
We will make a preliminary selection and invite ten actors (m/f/x) to audition and get to know each other. In preparation for these auditions we will ask all candidates to prepare a short improvisation based on our specifications. The final selection of the five actors (m/f/x) needed to stage the work will then be made collectively through a democratic self-selection process. We do this by asking the candidates invited to rank each other on a scale from 9 (perfect) to 1 (unsuitable) according to their preferences, whereby everyone is only allowed to assign each value (1, 2, ... 9) once. The five actors (m/f/x) with the highest score will be invited to take on a part and participate in the development and world premiere of the work. Our director will not take part in this process, but reserves the right to a veto. If he decides to disqualify someone, all the candidates with lower scores move up the ranking accordingly.
Commitment
We intend to stage The Devil’s Kitchen as a rehearsed reading set to music by June 2024 and want to perform it at least eight times. We are anticipating around 20 days of (reading) rehearsals for the development of the work, spread over a period of six weeks.
Remuneration
All actors (m/f/x) will be members of our core team and our current plan is to share all profits (ticket sales, etc.) the initiative generates amongst core team members. At the same time we are self-funding or bootstrapping the development of this production and, until the development phase is completed, do not intend to apply for any significant amounts of external funding. This in turn means that we will probably not be able to pay actors for their participation in rehearsals (see above). As we do realise that this will put off many, we ask all applicants to address this point in their motivation letter and, if necessary, to let us know what other financial arrangement they would be willing to accept.
We are happy to answer any questions you may have.
